POWERWOLF – BLOOD OF THE SAINTS 2011

As one of the best live bands we saw this summer, Powerwolf is set to unleash their fourth full-length release “Blood of the Saints” late July. Trying to surpass the success of their previous release “Bible of the Best”, the wolf pack is back with epic vocal lines, powerful guitars and all around very entertaining songs.

While many bands keep playing Power Metal in the traditional sense, we love bands like Powerwolf and Sabaton that push things with more powerful and diverse vocal styles and very well crafted lyrics and concepts behind their releases. “Blood of the Saints” features 11 songs and 41 minutes of pure Powerwolf catchiness and should propel them to the international status that band’s like Sabaton have achieved recently.

After the traditional intro song, “Sanctified with Dynamite” opens the album with a powerful choir section and very crushing riffing. The powerful chorus ‘die, die, dynamite’ is very epic and gets you going since the start of the album. The guitar antics are pretty solid and while never overdone, they show skill and class. With a slower pace, but equal epicness, we have “We Drink Your Blood” a very effective anthem with yet another crushing chorus section that will stick on your head for days.

The more traditional Power Metal anthems “Murder at Midnight” and “All We Need is Blood” give way for Attila Dorn’s vocals to shine, and feature great guitar work from Matthew and Charles Greywolf. Our favorite song of the album has to be the very entertaining “Dead Boys Don’t Cry”, too bad is only 3 minutes long. The multiple-vocals on “Son of a Wolf” make this song standout as a clear candidate for a catchy single.

If you like more ‘Gothic/Symphonic’ oriented songs, “Phantom of the Funeral” and “Ira Sancti” are lighter and less dull versions of Therion-style songs. If you are into a more epic feeling, “Die, Die, Crucified” will surely rock your world because of its super catchy chorus line.

In general, we have to say that Powerwolf only keeps getting better and better with time. If you are a fan of Power Metal and catchy chorus lines, you should definitely go and buy this release. Paired with the band’s unrivaled live setting theatrics, we hope to hear more from this band in the future and hopefully see them touring in North America soon.
